Empower Your Students: Tips for Building Math Confidence

Hey friends,

We’ve all seen it—students hesitating to try, saying, “I’m just not good at math.”

But what if we could change that mindset?

This week, I’m sharing strategies and resources to help you empower your students and build their confidence in math.

Tips for Building Math Confidence:

  1. Start with Success: Begin each lesson with a task nearly every student can complete. Early wins set a positive tone and encourage participation.
  2. Focus on Growth: Highlight effort and progress over perfection. Share examples of how persistence leads to improvement.
  3. Make Math Relatable: Use real-world scenarios to show how math connects to their lives and interests. This helps students see the value in what they’re learning.
  4. Encourage Mistakes: Normalize mistakes as part of learning. Celebrate the effort and discuss how mistakes help deepen understanding. Here are some posters that support this idea in your classroom!

Free Resource: Download this Growth Mindset Poster to inspire your students and remind them that math is a skill they can improve. Download it here. I am also including a Fixed Vs. Growth Mindset Poster as well - just because I think we could all benefit from the reminder it gives. Download that one here!

Quick Tip: Use peer teaching to build confidence! Pair students to explain concepts to each other—it reinforces skills and empowers both learners.
